General Responsibilities
The duties most germane to the current concern with the implications of automation for air traffic control are monitoring and control, diagnosis of systems (as opposed to equipment components), certification, and restoration of services. The general applications of automation to monitoring and control have been mentioned in Chapter 4 in connection with maintenance control centers. Automation has been applied to system diagnostics in connection with both the MCC capabilities, discussed above, and the processes of certification and restoration, discussed below.
